killing time

In Cuzco again today. There was an earthquake yesterday in Lima, Peru (if you remember just a 20 hr bus ride away). We were in Machu Picchu at the time and did not feel a thing, so we have not yet really been affected by it. We do fly to Lima tomorrow and hope there are not delays...

Our last night in Aguas Calientes was nice. We ran into many of the people we saw at Machu Picchu and had a few drinks. There is not much of a nightlife, but we found a cute place to hang for the evening. We also visited the hot springs (that´s aguas calientes in spanish) before dinner to relax and chat.

It was light out for the train ride and taxi ride back to Cuzco this morning. All of the mountain sides have agricultural terraces, which the natives still use today. SOme of them are so high it must take them at least a day just to get there, not to mention bringing supplies up and the food down. Unfortunately both Doreen and Stephanie are sick with a flu (I think). Doreen was the first to get sick is now starting to feel better. After a twisting, turning drive down from Ollaytatambo, she threw up right in the street. Poor girls. I went off on my own and explored the cathedral at the Plaza de Armas and another church. I then met a nice man from New Jersey. There were these little kids trying to sell us overpriced finger puppets and they would not leave us alone. We asked them to go get us bananas- they did so we paid them for those instead. They didn´t bug us after that!

Probably just staying in tonight to take care of the sick ones. Buenos Noches!

Hi Car,
I was so worried when I saw on Yahoo that there had been an earthquake in Peru. I called Paw Paw and your mom and they felt you were safe. Nick had called too. Looks like they were right, thank goodness!
I have been checking your blog all day waiting for a message from you so I was glad to finally get one.
They have all been reading your blogs and I hadn't tried because I assumed you wouldn't be doing that so soon. Boy am I glad they told me to read them. Everything is so interesting and your writing lets me just picture everything. Is that because you were a journalism major???
Sounds like you are having a great time and meeting interesting and nice friends. Sorry to hear about Doreen and Steph getting sick. Hope you aren't next. Maybe it was the food! Beware!!
Miss you and am loving your blog. Have fun and be safe.
Much love,
Aunt Diane

HI Car,
Dad called us in the Denver airport to let us know that you guys were OK. Your blog came through while we were in the air. You wouldn't believe how many people have called to ask about you. Lulu even called from her vacation in Washington! Poor Steph and Doreen. I hope they rally soon. If it was the food, I always heard Peptobismol helps. I'll be anxious to hear what you see in Lima. The news says there are >500 dead, but not all in Lima. It looked really bad.

Have fun and keep those blogs coming. They are our only link!

Love, Mom xxxooo

Hi Car,
It's Birthday Time!!! Are you celebrating with something special or is this just one big celebration trip? Hope Doreen and Steph are feeling better so they can celebrate with you. No drinking though, just cake and ice cream!! This is your Aunt Diane talking!!!!!!!!!!!
How's the weather down there? It's still in the high 90's here in Charleston, SC and I'm praying for snow. Anything to cool this place off. I mowed the grass at about 8:30 last night. If I had waited any later I would have had to attach flashlights to the mower. I was just waiting for the sun to go down and the temp to drop a bit.
Aren't you glad you don't have to be worried about cutting the grasss right now?
Hope you have a Happy Birthday. Do something fun. I'm thinking of you and miss you.
Hugs and love,
Diane

Hi Car,
Some sad news from Judy. Her brother and a friend died in his sea plane shortly after take off on Thursday around noon. It crash-landed and caught on fire. They were on their way to Quebec to go fishing. Judy called me that evening to tell me and she's devasted, as would be expected. She has had so many tragic things happen in her life and she surely didn't need this.
Thought you would want to know and keep her in your prayers.
Much love,
Diane
